Blogger's Quilt Festival is here!!!<br />

<br />
The linky party opened a few days ago and it has prompted me to finally get online and blog about the quilt I made my niece Arielle for her birth.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJmqvuKE6qWpI4QKe57vP_wQ0G6PKl92q4BPo61jIRfQUYkPEdlL4QqszPonAdvi1VLctJoYihhnT8qlnZh53ReT3rDSDucal0do9ukPFcuuc1PUNJSpXEcELgFy3Y9U-cUgnfFDpl8x0/s1600/2014-05-17+10.00.32b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJmqvuKE6qWpI4QKe57vP_wQ0G6PKl92q4BPo61jIRfQUYkPEdlL4QqszPonAdvi1VLctJoYihhnT8qlnZh53ReT3rDSDucal0do9ukPFcuuc1PUNJSpXEcELgFy3Y9U-cUgnfFDpl8x0/s1600/2014-05-17+10.00.32b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<u>Quilt Stats</u>:<br />
Pattern: <a href="http://suchdesigns.bigcartel.com/product/giggle-squeaktm-quilt-pattern">Giggle + Squeak pattern</a> from <a href="http://www.such-designs.com/">SUCH Designs</a><br />
Fabrics: Various fabrics in mainly purples, greens, and greys with a few pops of blues and pinks<br />
Methods Used: Applique, quilt-as-you-go, straight line quilting & free-motion quilting<br />
Quilted: By me on my home machine<br />
Dimensions: 46" x 46"<br />
Completed: March 2014<br />
<br />
Arielle's nursery theme was Monsters so I knew right away which pattern I would use. I bought the <a href="http://suchdesigns.bigcartel.com/product/giggle-squeaktm-quilt-pattern">Giggle + Squeak pattern</a> from Carrie of <a href="http://www.such-designs.com/">SUCH Designs</a> a few years ago at a quilt show and she was such a lovely person to meet. It's always nice to know that people are just as wonderful in person as they seem on their blogs.<br />
<br />
I loved adding all the little details to the faces in each block. Some definitely came out looking more monster-like than others, but I love them all.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw4dvDB2eo2xWHl_LpO7EKnZj4kbVy-eQcsmqDr5U1Ikxjyje8NECCB-utpb43zej3e5_qEoFFPOi77-c5dLrAqXX4mHi7UxGflqp9A8t_gmppCQpQvZAk6nk3pb3PB9P-nEEV5TftFZU/s1600/2014-03-01+15.30.12b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw4dvDB2eo2xWHl_LpO7EKnZj4kbVy-eQcsmqDr5U1Ikxjyje8NECCB-utpb43zej3e5_qEoFFPOi77-c5dLrAqXX4mHi7UxGflqp9A8t_gmppCQpQvZAk6nk3pb3PB9P-nEEV5TftFZU/s1600/2014-03-01+15.30.12b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
And while this photo isn't the greatest for showing the true colors of the quilt, I love that the quilting is easy to see. I quilted each block differently as inspiration hit me. My favorite is the top center since I free-motion quilted loops and hearts in it. I also loved the top left, which is just a back and forth squiggle, but it took only a few minutes to finish so it was awesome.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg28uq88CNmVeFPUhwgv8Ab_b4WnAIZXL6NdPuXcwH77GHVpF1GgcglXi9_91cBBQgAOxXma832HpGFBdBO4K_m9SuUPRRJlqwxfQXoUxUHoJzcqgihm3u38NQEdXCEf6EM5qO_-bYnEWM/s1600/2014-03-08+17.11.31b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg28uq88CNmVeFPUhwgv8Ab_b4WnAIZXL6NdPuXcwH77GHVpF1GgcglXi9_91cBBQgAOxXma832HpGFBdBO4K_m9SuUPRRJlqwxfQXoUxUHoJzcqgihm3u38NQEdXCEf6EM5qO_-bYnEWM/s1600/2014-03-08+17.11.31b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I didn't want to buy any additional fabric for the back so I used up all the leftovers from making the front. I've never made such a scrappy backing before and I love it. Since I did quilt-as-you-go on the front there's very minimal quilting on the back. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoqzVCYxRARxHPX4-zq8FIJAav6X5p9o0t_quiUBkLwSVQZZZhMYpWt7D0dq5i5n04HIoHGlZ1UqS-WWFlIgLYr9VQUuzEjX286k_9xU3BINHWx_k0DIt3O1jdpkDO56EDoKaB2LImTts/s1600/2014-03-08+17.14.08b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoqzVCYxRARxHPX4-zq8FIJAav6X5p9o0t_quiUBkLwSVQZZZhMYpWt7D0dq5i5n04HIoHGlZ1UqS-WWFlIgLYr9VQUuzEjX286k_9xU3BINHWx_k0DIt3O1jdpkDO56EDoKaB2LImTts/s1600/2014-03-08+17.14.08b.jpg" /></a></div>
I also did a little embroidery tag for the back and appliqued it on in the center of the large square of text you see on the bottom right of the above photo. And do you see the date? Today is actually Ari's 6 month birthday! Happy 6 months little one!!! <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
These photos of Ari enjoying her quilt were actually taken over the weekend, so this is her just a few days shy of 6 months. She's shaping up to be quite the bruiser, just like her cousin Penny.<br />

I have fully embraced this round of Selfish Sewing Week and I've been spending as much spare time as I can in my sewing room working on projects just for ME. <br />
<br />
So far I've managed to get one project done each day of Selfish Sewing week, and I have plans for the rest of the week. Let's hope I can keep this ball rolling!<br />

<br />
I realized that I don't have a picture of the completed Ruby Top I made on Tuesday, so you will all have to make do with my work-in-progress picture I snapped. I'm currently wearing the top otherwise I'd try and get a shot of it now.<br />
<br />

<br />
Which brings me to <a href="http://sozowhatdoyouknow.blogspot.com/2014/04/me-made-may14-your-pledges.html">Me Made May</a>! (Like I don't have enough things going on).<br />
<br />
Here goes!<br />
<br />
"I, Steph Granite, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '14. I endeavor to wear at least one handmade item each day for the duration of May 2014 and to make a new garment each week"<br />
<br />
I feel like it might be hard to wear something EACH DAY, but when I think about it I have quite a number of handmade clothes, so I should be able to so it! <br />

<br />
Yes, like many of you my first projects on a sewing machine were all clothing. I actually sewed garments pretty exclusively until I discovered quilting 5 years ago, and it's all been downhill from there.<br />
<br />
Well recently I looked in my closet and I decided it was time to sew up a few things for myself.<br />
<br />
First up was the <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/2013/09/ruby-dress-top-pattern-is-here/">Ruby Top</a> by <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/">Made-By-Rae</a>. I already had her <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/washi/">Washi Dress pattern</a> (see the post <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/washi/">here</a>) and I love it so I figured it was time to give Ruby a try.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZEERQa8p_z-1-9r9gZY23Xs1pNfEHj88gJilXWNoExPdeltVkhlk-R-TM3ZqtUhYk7CT4BWWjAegRi9ZMx4NsJg0wQB74AnmSBYIDI03sysbGGNSy1sm4UpWjao1neRDkwTVGIbRn2nc/s1600/2014-03-18+22.55.50b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZEERQa8p_z-1-9r9gZY23Xs1pNfEHj88gJilXWNoExPdeltVkhlk-R-TM3ZqtUhYk7CT4BWWjAegRi9ZMx4NsJg0wQB74AnmSBYIDI03sysbGGNSy1sm4UpWjao1neRDkwTVGIbRn2nc/s1600/2014-03-18+22.55.50b.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ruby Top #1</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I started off making a dress but since I'm pretty top heavy it just didn't look right. I need things that accentuate my curves a little bit more. But I love it as a top. I love it so much that I made two more and I have two more in the plans.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ruby Top #3 (This time in KNIT!)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And since I was on a roll (and since I had just purchased Parcel #1 from <a href="https://patternparcel.com/">Perfect Pattern Parcel</a>) I decided to try my hand at an Ava top. <br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sleeve or No Sleeve?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I had a hard time deciding whether to put the sleeve on it or not, so I solicited the advise of my Instagram friends and everyone said to go with no sleeve, so that's what I did! <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Me!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I actually love it sleeveless. Perfect for sunny California days (which is everyday, people. Sorry to rub it in your faces)<br />
<br />
And because I was feeling confident, I pulled out a WIP from last year's Selfish Sewing Week and I grit my teeth and finished it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9mXhcWrdMXIux8sOfz9-Oki7vVdw9byALcfMfI4f3b90X7T65G6VawmK3wDmhjFPzlF0V2Ghzpg3d8AC1iKDcMh6hZE8PrDKiMu6s0ol1NDi8ADSc56e4v31LGRKkmPLkVGo9pCrwz-c/s1600/2014-03-23+23.10.08-1b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9mXhcWrdMXIux8sOfz9-Oki7vVdw9byALcfMfI4f3b90X7T65G6VawmK3wDmhjFPzlF0V2Ghzpg3d8AC1iKDcMh6hZE8PrDKiMu6s0ol1NDi8ADSc56e4v31LGRKkmPLkVGo9pCrwz-c/s1600/2014-03-23+23.10.08-1b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
That's right, the <a href="http://jamiechristina.com/products/miz-mozelle-dress-sewing-pattern">Miz Mozelle</a> dress <a href="http://sewingbystephanie.blogspot.com/search/label/clothing">I blogged about</a> in September is finally finished. I had to carefully pull the collar off and make a new one that laid correctly. And let me tell you, taking the collar off was no easy feat. I accidentally ripped a giant hole in the dress, but I was able to cut the neckline just a little bit lower and make the collar just a little bit wider and it all worked out.<br />
<br />
It might actually be better, because I can ::just:: manage to maneuver the neckline so I'm able to nurse while wearing this dress. I wore this one to church this past Sunday and it was so comfortable. Win!<br />
<br />
And guess what?! Selfish Sewing Week is just around the corner and I have some pretty big plans. So mark your calendars and plan to set aside time to sew something for yourself April 28-May 3<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://imaginegnats.com/selfish-sewing-week" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img src="http://imaginegnats.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/ssw-logo-final-350-px.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a></div>
Oh, and while you're doing all that selfish sewing, sew yourself a top as well and join Rae in her Spring Top Sewalong April 14- May 11<br />

9. Finish quilting husband's Mario Quilt<br />
Current status: Partially quilted. Still needs binding<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
10. Sew 2 new tanks<br />
Current status: Fabrics and patterns selected (the Ruby tank pattern)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx5YgfkaZUswjlCQTYvd76gVrUErrRTWG-tlmSrnNsTm2OG-RVPVjeW9F_GAHUKcIUsfguyqd5s3b3SE3SvhTDVuelJ8m2LdKUxl2TfIxCRZ5IoovWf_xPTErNVJy_kOHxmGiVqCDKccs/s1600/2014-04-08+09.32.50b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx5YgfkaZUswjlCQTYvd76gVrUErrRTWG-tlmSrnNsTm2OG-RVPVjeW9F_GAHUKcIUsfguyqd5s3b3SE3SvhTDVuelJ8m2LdKUxl2TfIxCRZ5IoovWf_xPTErNVJy_kOHxmGiVqCDKccs/s1600/2014-04-08+09.32.50b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And that's it! I'm limiting myself to 10 projects to finish, and even that's pretty ambitious for me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Whoops! I guess that's not it! <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Hi everyone! January is my month as queen bee in hive 10 for the 2014 round of Stash Bee, and since I just spent what felt like forever writing a tutorial on how to make these blocks I thought I'd go ahead and share the tutorial with all of you. Enjoy! <br /><br />
<b>January Block- Hive 10: Scrappy String Block</b><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAEldnEKuPwCJajv4AyWpwuPvFbtyW6DuPjHMMwCUHoOSH-hB9cyh8VEPMwBv4wGiN2p3YZVDjpHKFFnsrHDPxBy4YL_k90wovZRJ6ZC8MvFzy3wgPBwYn-JRcOiWfZpmTNGCakaNNqck/s1600/2013-12-25+22.35.41e.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="366" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAEldnEKuPwCJajv4AyWpwuPvFbtyW6DuPjHMMwCUHoOSH-hB9cyh8VEPMwBv4wGiN2p3YZVDjpHKFFnsrHDPxBy4YL_k90wovZRJ6ZC8MvFzy3wgPBwYn-JRcOiWfZpmTNGCakaNNqck/s400/2013-12-25+22.35.41e.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Materials needed:<br />
-Fabric scraps in bright fresh colors<span style="font-size: x-small;"> (ranging in length 12 inches to 2 inches, and in width 1 inch to 2 inches)</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">-White fabric measuring 4 inches by 12 inches</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">-Glue stick</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">-Scratch paper </span><br />
-Pen<br />
-Ruler<br />
<br />
We'll start our blocks by making our templates. We're going to be sewing our fabric strips directly onto the paper and then tearing the paper away, so it's good to use a thinner paper. I know some people like to use pages from a phone book since they're nice and thin. I didn't have any phone books laying around, so I just used scratch paper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaV9ziKHFneNJHcletr57-C60Q50jHo4JpNxc-ruqqrDlZBBDCNKlId8TZvmZGZMdEU3CyBlmE1FTF2riZSpLFOl_E0yyxMnAxxsrVTD1kKTMnheT8Lt5OVkhmm55576gj4f_nGAj8u5U/s1600/2013-12-25+18.55.40.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaV9ziKHFneNJHcletr57-C60Q50jHo4JpNxc-ruqqrDlZBBDCNKlId8TZvmZGZMdEU3CyBlmE1FTF2riZSpLFOl_E0yyxMnAxxsrVTD1kKTMnheT8Lt5OVkhmm55576gj4f_nGAj8u5U/s400/2013-12-25+18.55.40.jpg" width="300" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqJhz_wP0OWoMyTU_S_w8TDWZMdcqfVRI4B6jBUUQ3V-9B1GjclGpbS6REMuO_R8hz2MeWolDdVz3FjVbA8KKZBynlBeHaMKP6-Y5UX-lmtkZobXPg9ulSBYWHhEI4gkCrstneD0GSfMQ/s1600/2013-12-25+18.53.21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqJhz_wP0OWoMyTU_S_w8TDWZMdcqfVRI4B6jBUUQ3V-9B1GjclGpbS6REMuO_R8hz2MeWolDdVz3FjVbA8KKZBynlBeHaMKP6-Y5UX-lmtkZobXPg9ulSBYWHhEI4gkCrstneD0GSfMQ/s400/2013-12-25+18.53.21.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Using your ruler draw an 8 inch square. Draw a diagonal line through the square, and then draw a dotted line 1/2 inch above and below the diagonal.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN1wIJukgbaR0zE_JyzCWjH5jyIMVU8TZ2dpomJobi1nL7P3qM5XLKapMIMw28BGXPNoq068zVvhQDJPuzx4Inqnx5o717fTrkmY5b6S-xg-2VKcAtvMoOqGCfH7xSBNmvitwAJKLUGjw/s1600/2013-12-25+21.25.10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a> <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN1wIJukgbaR0zE_JyzCWjH5jyIMVU8TZ2dpomJobi1nL7P3qM5XLKapMIMw28BGXPNoq068zVvhQDJPuzx4Inqnx5o717fTrkmY5b6S-xg-2VKcAtvMoOqGCfH7xSBNmvitwAJKLUGjw/s1600/2013-12-25+21.25.10.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjN1wIJukgbaR0zE_JyzCWjH5jyIMVU8TZ2dpomJobi1nL7P3qM5XLKapMIMw28BGXPNoq068zVvhQDJPuzx4Inqnx5o717fTrkmY5b6S-xg-2VKcAtvMoOqGCfH7xSBNmvitwAJKLUGjw/s400/2013-12-25+21.25.10.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Next cut your white fabric into 4 strips 1 inch by 12 inches long. I used Kona white, but you can use any white or off white. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHgUXiSx1JRLkBkPkGrsAkqJwYxpR0t9Yy4amdp90bJq6q3arB3UWJuJV6Le6UZ8hB1fnrdhDIsw7HUGigcKvQjaGv0zSECSEPW4SWTVypFsNXusL1P3BHueJzK9nz2_4ycufKDe_eshc/s1600/2013-12-25+21.43.13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHgUXiSx1JRLkBkPkGrsAkqJwYxpR0t9Yy4amdp90bJq6q3arB3UWJuJV6Le6UZ8hB1fnrdhDIsw7HUGigcKvQjaGv0zSECSEPW4SWTVypFsNXusL1P3BHueJzK9nz2_4ycufKDe_eshc/s400/2013-12-25+21.43.13.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
Now for the fun part! Time to pull your fabric for the strips. I went a little overboard and this is the pile I pulled.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNAb3OC0RvcuhnHpuQSnMOo4Wv5pKAbMXUwnu8a2r5e9M6zfekM8HhL7VczH9tDkG1iD-PxptZVehYkpjZGxD_m1u6eLPm2KPKX_hsFdz-ztY_dmzcJIxtFy6nVffJ-LzW7nV-sRRJ-yU/s1600/2013-12-25+21.37.34.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNAb3OC0RvcuhnHpuQSnMOo4Wv5pKAbMXUwnu8a2r5e9M6zfekM8HhL7VczH9tDkG1iD-PxptZVehYkpjZGxD_m1u6eLPm2KPKX_hsFdz-ztY_dmzcJIxtFy6nVffJ-LzW7nV-sRRJ-yU/s400/2013-12-25+21.37.34.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I then ironed the scraps and cut the fabrics into strips ranging from 1 inch wide to 2 inches wide. I think the majority of my strips were around 1.5 inches to 1 inch wide. I didn't worry too much about the length of the strips, I just made sure some of them were at least 12 inches long. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4jt7EtGlBOIJ4U7Tjgl43aRhc2JQo9pnuplJfaKYwAyYNaqrjgRC7MU4r_iQaHUalRYEs8PNXOZrG6NJZwKWUEQLHXzEqdDoiTDBIRKg6QLxosplxo4aP_5z1hktEGVXwhnrNUImKsQs/s1600/2013-12-25+21.59.15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4jt7EtGlBOIJ4U7Tjgl43aRhc2JQo9pnuplJfaKYwAyYNaqrjgRC7MU4r_iQaHUalRYEs8PNXOZrG6NJZwKWUEQLHXzEqdDoiTDBIRKg6QLxosplxo4aP_5z1hktEGVXwhnrNUImKsQs/s400/2013-12-25+21.59.15.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Now grab some strips and arrange them over the template. You want to make sure the fabric overlaps each other and the edges a bit. One you have the strips picked out you can stack them in order and set them to the side. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUaKLfwpkoNxdVIO4Ko40UtC5PSBUQ4B5Eo1qYuZSH5VsV3NJZOrPciGYvWn5IkFGvQ08LqQlCjJuSBVoQh7HA2ZOpCz91nmwzGZV7yE21MB4i48FI7pv_bCb8_H2M8qjxhU9_Tf8I6P0/s1600/2013-12-25+22.03.58.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUaKLfwpkoNxdVIO4Ko40UtC5PSBUQ4B5Eo1qYuZSH5VsV3NJZOrPciGYvWn5IkFGvQ08LqQlCjJuSBVoQh7HA2ZOpCz91nmwzGZV7yE21MB4i48FI7pv_bCb8_H2M8qjxhU9_Tf8I6P0/s400/2013-12-25+22.03.58.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Now take your gluestick, your template, and one of your white strips... it's time to get started. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixlOEUftC34pC_iA8Ha7WXgM_BcYGSkcYhx6yLARuuYF6q-1e3E2IJJRKnNd3ZKJV5IuIP9BZU7fKIAdwERamacVqP8zF22wwbp7lfzvMSa5bHZncZMbj7ryx32U6XBdFH2cTWTr9G1CI/s1600/2013-12-25+22.00.35.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixlOEUftC34pC_iA8Ha7WXgM_BcYGSkcYhx6yLARuuYF6q-1e3E2IJJRKnNd3ZKJV5IuIP9BZU7fKIAdwERamacVqP8zF22wwbp7lfzvMSa5bHZncZMbj7ryx32U6XBdFH2cTWTr9G1CI/s400/2013-12-25+22.00.35.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
On the template, zig-zag your glue stick along the diagonal, filling in the spaces between the lines. Then lay your strip on top of the glue. <span style="font-size: x-small;">(you could, of course, omit the glue and either pin your strip in place or carefully hold it in place, but the gluestick works wonderfully)</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4GJVBhgILBdqZWQJI-g9r8fHOH_il91CIQ-gRwF2dkuuuY7KhCQ2P40QL1icA_2Ih2k9W2yWkTOX1ywTBWtteoK1zx8xid63yGQiixsoQvno3-aI0MlH1AcZmv0EAfrWgHHKS3htGlEI/s1600/2013-12-25+22.01.19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4GJVBhgILBdqZWQJI-g9r8fHOH_il91CIQ-gRwF2dkuuuY7KhCQ2P40QL1icA_2Ih2k9W2yWkTOX1ywTBWtteoK1zx8xid63yGQiixsoQvno3-aI0MlH1AcZmv0EAfrWgHHKS3htGlEI/s400/2013-12-25+22.01.19.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Next, grab your first strip and lay it on top of the white strip, right sides together. You'll want to make sure that the fabric strip you're about the sew is long enough that it goes over the edges of the template where the seam will be <span style="font-size: x-small;">(1/4 inch from the edge)</span>. Check your needle placement to make sure you have a 1/4 inch seam allowance, and shorten your stitch length <span style="font-size: x-small;">(I set mine to 4, where my normal stitch length is 5)</span>, and you're ready to sew. Sew down the edge of the strip, going back and forth at the beginning and end of the strip to lock the stitches.<br />

I found the easiest way to tear the paper away from the block was to fold along each seam, and then give the block a tug to pull the paper from the seams.<br />

The seams will all be pressed towards the outsides of the blocks as a result of pressing the block as you go. Don't feel you need to press the seams open, having them pressed to the sides is fine. <br />

<br />
Now that you've made one, it's time to make 3 more! Once you get the rhythm of how to make them down they go very quickly. Here are six of them that I made:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5Hh1cSxw-NM-qSYFuVERHSmFHydVvF9xvWuYw0lXrhuKXJ7GNKW_HT3V_sexazgRn4jVe4LdAJnXXhkEEhUDPoki4bi0uShTv57Tq-Zt5gUWET6xpf7SBEoNzV7iAqPftfSDA136-fCU/s1600/2013-12-27+20.44.47.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="436" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5Hh1cSxw-NM-qSYFuVERHSmFHydVvF9xvWuYw0lXrhuKXJ7GNKW_HT3V_sexazgRn4jVe4LdAJnXXhkEEhUDPoki4bi0uShTv57Tq-Zt5gUWET6xpf7SBEoNzV7iAqPftfSDA136-fCU/s640/2013-12-27+20.44.47.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<b><br /></b>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>****Bonus Tutorial****</b></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
How to add a selvage edge to your quilt block: </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
On the sixth block I made I added a selvage edge. I thought it was fun and added an interesting aspect to the block, so I thought I'd share how I did it.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Cut the selvage strip just like any other strip, but do not cut along the finished edge of the fabric, since it's already finished :-) <span style="font-size: x-small;">(I probably didn't need to say this, but I thought I'd include it just in case there was any confusion)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Start your block just like any other block. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3Hedtm8ngvN0tyzMIQ1h5K5ymCkmlf8dlQAZk4oyYReL4HP_08UAWHw4P6-pa48nxnrQ7Rg7MXf70SHByAnYoDyfcZfXduayy2VqfvbuY6iPdz_yYKcOSMP_9h8GDdPkKaBhEIZEO4CU/s1600/2013-12-27+19.56.51.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3Hedtm8ngvN0tyzMIQ1h5K5ymCkmlf8dlQAZk4oyYReL4HP_08UAWHw4P6-pa48nxnrQ7Rg7MXf70SHByAnYoDyfcZfXduayy2VqfvbuY6iPdz_yYKcOSMP_9h8GDdPkKaBhEIZEO4CU/s320/2013-12-27+19.56.51.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
When it's time to add in the selvage strip, instead of laying the selvage strip right side down on top of the template and matching the seam with the strip below it, you're going to lay the selvage strip right side UP and overlap the finished edge with the strip below it. <br />

Now sew down the strip as close to the edge as you can get. In the picture below my needle is approximately 1/8th inch <span style="font-size: x-small;">(or possible even less)</span> from the edge of the finished selvage edge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Once you've sewn down the selvage edge, just continue your block following the tutorial above!</div>

Oh well, I don't have time to take a better shot. This is as good as it gets for now.<br />

<br />
<br />
As you can see I've made a little bit of progress on the quilt I'm making my niece since <a href="http://sewingbystephanie.blogspot.com/2013/11/wip-wednesday-11-20-2013.html">the last time I showed it</a>. All of the face pieces are on but I haven't done any actual SEWING of anything yet. I definitely missed my goal of having this done by Thanksgiving. Instead of stressing in the sewing room I just admitted to myself that it wouldn't be done in time and allowed myself to enjoy the holiday. Holidays and family are stressful enough without trying to add in a crazy sewing deadline.<br />
<br />
And as proof that I enjoyed my holiday, here's an impromptu photo we snapped of our little family while we were waiting for our photo with Santa. <3 them!<br />
<br />

<br />
First off are my Christmas tablerunners off of <a href="http://sewingbystephanie.blogspot.com/2013/10/lets-get-some-stuff-finished.html">my 4th quarter finish-a-long list</a> (#8 on the list). I buckled down and spent a few days pebble quilting both of these, and of love the way they turned out (which I knew I would). <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq5F1RrmSAgoqZkr6ia88gBcDbJhCh14AnQv2Nj1r16uGAwhhyTTb33bnYV_6nPUCyAZdKCTGDetsx8EyxMON-bQoASCIvlKPV7sJaHHyEBp2iT3zlMUG8XvD4HLJl3iZFFxbUgKWCHeM/s1600/runnersB.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq5F1RrmSAgoqZkr6ia88gBcDbJhCh14AnQv2Nj1r16uGAwhhyTTb33bnYV_6nPUCyAZdKCTGDetsx8EyxMON-bQoASCIvlKPV7sJaHHyEBp2iT3zlMUG8XvD4HLJl3iZFFxbUgKWCHeM/s1600/runnersB.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And even though it wasn't on my Finish-A-Long list, after seeing photos of <a href="http://betteroffthread.com/the-countdown-to-christmas-quilt-along/">Better Off Thread's finished Advent calendar</a> on Instagram I knew I had to make one. Mine has only 12 pockets since I intend to use it during the 12 days of Christmas, but the pockets are larger so the finished product ends up being the same size as the 24 pocket version. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4i38xloZiEm9fseqmsyamYzuJVBVdiZ6FJiZZ65gyM8C3_52hQU5baJwmyqXbTeYbJKifX69-wUc3kdHSyJH_t42FHaVktL6rEHOohiJ8zGWteA8keVOe2mjAwBrOhL3Q4YVV4bLMuAg/s1600/calendarb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4i38xloZiEm9fseqmsyamYzuJVBVdiZ6FJiZZ65gyM8C3_52hQU5baJwmyqXbTeYbJKifX69-wUc3kdHSyJH_t42FHaVktL6rEHOohiJ8zGWteA8keVOe2mjAwBrOhL3Q4YVV4bLMuAg/s1600/calendarb.jpg" /></a></div>
As you can see I used the same fabrics from my tablerunners (and consequently the tree skirt I made last year) so everything matches, and I pebble quilted the calendar as well. Once I have my decorations up for Christmas I'll have to take a photo to share of everything "in action".<br />
<br />
My last thing to share is what's currently up on my design wall. This is #3 on my Finish-A-Long list. These are the 9 blocks for the quilt I'm making my niece (who was born yesterday-- 2 weeks early but doing great). I have the first layer of the monster applique on but I still have to add in all the details on the faces. I hope to get this quilt completed by Thanksgiving so my mom can hand deliver it to my sister and the baby when she goes out to meet them. They live in Hawaii and sadly it will be many months until my husband and I will be able to meet their little girl.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwQUbF4FUr-LZyAwVrHGRF_wgW8RZnwuWxHyiDvxHoAP6z2YKX7gezMPRnoHLjzW_hmgv9PwiPGLUjtoeePuNpJBxmOwsgX9jP-Ad8oiMfCw4xgN4iIq3lKPc3phO7K88S5ChRzCTNV5s/s1600/sproutb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwQUbF4FUr-LZyAwVrHGRF_wgW8RZnwuWxHyiDvxHoAP6z2YKX7gezMPRnoHLjzW_hmgv9PwiPGLUjtoeePuNpJBxmOwsgX9jP-Ad8oiMfCw4xgN4iIq3lKPc3phO7K88S5ChRzCTNV5s/s1600/sproutb.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
You'll have to forgive the quality of the photos. It's overcast and grey here and since that doesn't happen very often in Southern California I'm not very good at setting up lighting. I also had to snap these photos quickly so I could write this post and hopefully get some sewing done while the baby's still napping.<br />
<br />
Oh! And if you didn't see it my <a href="http://sewingbystephanie.blogspot.com/2012/06/mens-wallet-tutorial.html">Men's Wallet Tutorial</a> was featured on the Sew Mama Sew blog as a part of their Handmade Holidays roundup in the "Gifts for Men" post. <br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/10468153144/" title=""Be Creative" Dresden Mini Quilt by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt=""Be Creative" Dresden Mini Quilt" height="517" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5474/10468153144_c0523b5a19_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
This little mini quilt has been over a year in the making. I was inspired by <a href="http://www.bijoulovelydesigns.com/2012/08/be-inspired.html">this quilt</a> by <a href="http://www.bijoulovelydesigns.com/">Bijou Lovely </a>(hey, she told me to be inspired).<br />
<br />
I tried to "Be Creative" with the quilting on this one. I used superfine 100wt silver thread from invisafil for the quilting, which is a combination of free-motion and straight line. Each design is different, and while I used some designs I've repeated often I tried a few new ones as well. That woodgrain quilting is my first ever attempt.<br />
<br />
While the mini quilt might not be perfect, it makes me happy having it hanging on the wall above my computer.<br />
<br />
<u>Quilt Stats</u>:<br />
Pattern: Dresden plate, inspired by <a href="http://www.bijoulovelydesigns.com/2012/08/be-inspired.html">this quilt</a> by <a href="http://www.bijoulovelydesigns.com/">Bijou Lovely </a><br />
Fabrics: Various prints from my stash, Essex linen in Natural, Kona Indigo<br />
Quilted: By me on my home machine with 100wt invisafil thread in silver<br />
Dimensions: 24" x 24" <br />
Completed: October 2013 <br />
<br />
And hey, why not? I'm entering this little quilt in the mini quilt category of the Fall 2013 Blogger's Quilt Festival.<br />

<a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/blog/" title="AmysCreativeSide"><img alt="AmysCreativeSide" src="http://amyscreativeside.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Fall-BQF-Button-e1380294012428.jpg" style="border: none;" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I have a quilt to share with everyone today that I'm really excited about.<br />
<br />
You could even say that this quilt was 9 months in the making..... but not really.<br />
<br />
Here it is..... Penny's quilt<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/10468154936/" title="Penny's Quilt by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Penny's Quilt" height="862" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7320/10468154936_758887b205_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
This is the quilt I made my daughter Penelope. It's definitely the showcase of her woodlands-themed nursery and everything else in the nursery evolves around it. This is my baby quilt entry for the Fall 2013 Blogger's Quilt Festival.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/10468151874/" title="Penny's Quilt by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Penny's Quilt" height="859" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2867/10468151874_e053c32af0_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
I love the colors. SO bright and fun without reading either "boy" or "girl". The fabric inspiration was the "Fox Hollow" line by Monaluna (which I used in the border and the centers of the dresdens), paired with five different more basic prints.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/10468152314/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Penny's Quilt by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Penny's Quilt" height="845" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7444/10468152314_e38359809c_o.jpg" width="650" /></a><br />
For the pattern I was inspired by <a href="http://www.rileyblakedesigns.com/blog/2012/07/11/project-design-team-wednesday-dresden-burst-baby-q/">this quilt</a> by <a href="http://www.polkadotchair.com/">Melissa of Polka Dot Chair</a>, but I wanted the border to be a little more fun and show off the different prints in the Fox Hollow line, and I wanted to frame the quilt a little more so I added in the gingham piping between the center panel of the quilt and the border. It gives the quilt such fun dimension.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/10468143455/" title="Penny's Quilt by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Penny's Quilt" height="898" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7406/10468143455_4368ef5838_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
I chose the fabric placement for the centers of the dresdens very
purposefully. The center of the large dresden has a frog under a flower
because Penny's daddy's nickname as a child was "Toad". The smallest
dresden has a little gnome poking out of his stump house because gnomes
are mommy's favorite. The mid-sized dresden has a momma fox being
followed by her two babies, with a papa fox watching, because the fox
family reminds me of our family (though of course we only have one child
so far). <br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/10468152276/" title="Penny's Quilt by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Penny's Quilt" height="962" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5537/10468152276_8f1607cb6d_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
For the quilting, I didn't want to distract too much from the quilt top,
but I did want to add a lot of free motion quilting, so I did things a
little differently.... I had two layers of batting and quilted the top
and back separately. It gives the quilt a heavier weight, but since I
was using fairly thin cotton batting it worked out well. On the quilt top there's quilting around each square in the border and each spike in the dresdens. I used the blanket stitch on my sewing machine. The look it gives each dresden plate is fantastic.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/10517503236/" title="Penny's Quilt by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Penny's Quilt" height="514" src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3773/10517503236_44514fce76_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
The back is quilted in an allover design with flowers. It was quite fun
to do once I got the hang of it. Once I had the back and front quilted
individually I did some quilting that tied the whole quilt together.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/10468145685/" title="Penny's Quilt by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Penny's Quilt" height="442" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5482/10468145685_7d737c5d56_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
I love it and I hope it's something Penny can treasure when she's older. She was kind of cranky when I was taking these photos so she's not in any of them, but I hope to get a shot or two of her on the quilt tomorrow to share with everyone.<br />
<br />
edited 10/25/13: The photoshoot was well worth the wait. While I had 200+ mediocre photos of a blurry baby, all the shots were worth it to get this one perfect shot of my little girl.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/10479850785/" title="Penny & Her Quilt by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Penny & Her Quilt" height="798" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7385/10479850785_a1ffe230cc_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
She's still a little blurry and the quilt is slightly out of focus, but that smile is to die for. (And yes, she's wearing the little mini dirndl I made her for Halloween, but I'll post about that in a few days).<br />
<br />

<br />
Progress I've made so far:<br />
<br />
Goal #2: I've labeled 1 quilt<br />
<br />
Goal #3: I've narrowed my fabric selections down, but I've also realized I need more lavender prints so I'm waiting on those<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQrEAMK1GMnKZVyhDzQCjipjTpzK4bUl9tXDfWSSFeAKHdgM6PNwDIaYw32dWUBEL1e5nCnx0ppmVlolNBCqhyNFXM6GqIXq7DIsfNcDT1yBlNFL5CV7GDGjvrBpV2qGU3ixyDc_Ofphk/s1600/backgroundsb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQrEAMK1GMnKZVyhDzQCjipjTpzK4bUl9tXDfWSSFeAKHdgM6PNwDIaYw32dWUBEL1e5nCnx0ppmVlolNBCqhyNFXM6GqIXq7DIsfNcDT1yBlNFL5CV7GDGjvrBpV2qGU3ixyDc_Ofphk/s1600/backgroundsb.jpg" /></a></div>
But I do need some input: Which looks better, background #1 or background #2?<br />
<br />
Goal #4: Paper pieces for EPP all cut and ready to go<br />
<br />
Goal #11: Quilting completed, now just need to purchase and sew on binding<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUA7mr-xUQ4wCjYTuveYq8OARcnl2UhqXeAU4jbcsc5SDOYNNlwtuxPjDPj4ZccaB19grEUR5QOhj-XbCsKGwh_q93WKyupDRkQi6d1JgJ0btFAm9zAY2C0vK91SN_WXqCq0iU0ACedoA/s1600/2013-10-23+10.58.45b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUA7mr-xUQ4wCjYTuveYq8OARcnl2UhqXeAU4jbcsc5SDOYNNlwtuxPjDPj4ZccaB19grEUR5QOhj-XbCsKGwh_q93WKyupDRkQi6d1JgJ0btFAm9zAY2C0vK91SN_WXqCq0iU0ACedoA/s1600/2013-10-23+10.58.45b.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And then from my list of other goals (but not WIP goals) I've made a lot of progress on the Halloween costume for the Babe that will also double as an outfit for Oktoberfest. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF1ZJDVAqxyEIM0i6wg5DvDPKszJNJqmVrSOXX6qw7VlrJcrHhj4_t67MJ1P4r7QPFseruBnNMyy6rQbqfHYXDXhhX-lLxL2nfxEWfv29rRTWEGBz_blu7CHuw68tI9BGclTtX5azfdRY/s1600/2013-10-23+10.58.11b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF1ZJDVAqxyEIM0i6wg5DvDPKszJNJqmVrSOXX6qw7VlrJcrHhj4_t67MJ1P4r7QPFseruBnNMyy6rQbqfHYXDXhhX-lLxL2nfxEWfv29rRTWEGBz_blu7CHuw68tI9BGclTtX5azfdRY/s1600/2013-10-23+10.58.11b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
This is my hack of the Geranium dress by Made by Rae. I still need to add snaps in the back, hem it, and add elastic to the sleeves to make them puffy sleeves... but I need to actually try these on Penny before I do all that. I also need to sew an apron for it.<br />
<br />
Over the weekend my husband and I took Penny out to Oak Grove, CA to go pumpkin picking. It was a beautiful day, and we had a terrific time.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Let's Get Some Stuff Finished!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've been busy burning the midnight oil staying up after putting the babe to sleep working on getting pouches made and up for sale in my Etsy shop (<a href="http://sewingbystephanie.blogspot.com/2013/10/new-open-wide-pouches-listed-in-my-etsy.html">see details here</a>), but now that they're up I need to get serious and finish up some of my WIPs. While I'm working on finishing WIPs, I thought I'd join the final quarter of the <a href="http://www.shecanquilt.blogspot.com/p/2013-finish-long.html">2013 Finish-A-Long</a> with Leanne of <a href="http://www.shecanquilt.blogspot.com/">She Can Quilt</a></div>

That's it for my list of WIPs. Hopefully I'll get to a few of these before the mad rush to make Christmas presents sets in. Luckily a few of them are destined to be Christmas presents so there's a good chance I'll at least get to those ones.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Other goals of mine for this quarter include:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
-Halloween costume for the Babe</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
-Playmat quilt Christmas present for the Babe</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
-Photograph and start blogging about all the stuff I made this year that I haven't photographed or written about</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

What about you? Do you have any WIPs you're working on? Or is your list one like mine, a neverending one?<br />

<br />
<br />
It was super easy to pull together and I love it. I think next time I might use Pellon thermolam as interlining instead of cotton batting, but other than that I wouldn't make any other alterations.<br />
<br />
If you haven't checked out the <a href="https://www.e-junkie.com/ecom/gb.php?cl=76235&amp;c=ib&amp;aff=215402">sale at Michelle Patterns</a> yet you definitely should, it's their last one of the year.<br />

<a href="http://imaginegnats.blogspot.com/p/selfish-sewing-week.html" target="_blank"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_D1IvzrstwAfh-ikCF0raN__loJEJo_OufPIjQtraVGwFRAWfeFdDIDxdD7z8ehljCanRB9avjAmFup3BzDPWZvus_9D4Z2kqjZI7LadV2lT2ZNgJDUrBHnV2uaw9s_qvOKyku6PVofU_/s320/selfish+sewing+week+button+4.jpg" width="200" /></a></center>
<br />
I've Been Selfish... #Selfish Sewing that is!<br />
<br />
While I didn't get as much made during Selfish Sewing week as I wanted to, I'm very happy with what I did manage to accomplish.<br />
<br />
First off was the open wide pouch I made on Monday:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/9958553073/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Wide Open Pouch for #Selfish Sewing Week by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Wide Open Pouch for #Selfish Sewing Week" height="551" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2825/9958553073_8fbf676064_o.jpg" width="650" /></a><br />
<br />
Then there was this teapot cozy I made on Wednesday and then improved on Thursday:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMogYlGtndutpaFDT-5MzvmRcKee97EkkhUkIWhq9NTTqj327hthDfAc-vTYmSkvc4xkis2EIIPLxXuGHNFLIDZ-I2LK2cQnRNilEWqXdVAh5XJWq0-e7BhVXQjhYRbat5he9_DxKG-mY/s1600/2013-09-25+16.13.28b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMogYlGtndutpaFDT-5MzvmRcKee97EkkhUkIWhq9NTTqj327hthDfAc-vTYmSkvc4xkis2EIIPLxXuGHNFLIDZ-I2LK2cQnRNilEWqXdVAh5XJWq0-e7BhVXQjhYRbat5he9_DxKG-mY/s1600/2013-09-25+16.13.28b.jpg" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">The first version (above): The "spout" was a little too high, the top was a little too angled, and there was a centimeter gap at the bottom. Plus I thought I'd like it in linen and I ended up thinking it was too boring. The improved version (below) fixed all of these problems.</span><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/9987694315/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Teapot Cozy by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Teapot Cozy" height="475" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5522/9987694315_94265bd626_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/9987748216/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Teapot Cozy (Sans Teapot) by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Teapot Cozy (Sans Teapot)" height="481" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2889/9987748216_0b2c61c3c1_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
And finally there was the <a href="http://jamiechristina.com/products/miz-mozelle-dress-sewing-pattern" target="_blank">Miz Mozelle dress</a> I started Thursday night and worked on on Friday (but still haven't quite finished yet):<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/9987823963/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Miz Mozelle in progress by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Miz Mozelle in progress" height="459" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7368/9987823963_c6d37a5bec_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/9987823103/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Miz Mozelle in progress by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Miz Mozelle in progress" height="916" src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2863/9987823103_997d8cf070_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sewingbystephanie/9987747246/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Miz Mozelle in progress by SewingByStephanie, on Flickr"><img alt="Miz Mozelle in progress" height="867" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7308/9987747246_111431857f_o.jpg" width="650" /></a>
<br />
<br />
<br />
My thoughts?<br />
<br />
The open wide pouch was a lot of fun to make and I really like how easy it is to see everything inside of it. I ordered a 50 pack of zippers from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/zipit" target="_blank">Zipit on Etsy</a> so you can be sure that there will be MANY more of these in the future.<br />
<br />
The teapot cozy was fun to make and I love that it looks like a teapot. My first draft of the pattern was just a large half circle that covered the whole thing and it was just SO BORING. This cute tailored cozy is much better, though to be honest it's probably much more difficult to get on the pot than the half circle would have been.<br />
<br />
The Miz Mozelle dress pattern is AMAZING. I was a size 18 based on my bust measurement and it fits me so well and is really comfortable. The keyhole is a bit large and shows quite a bit of cleavage on me, but the hubs said it's his favorite part (go figure) and it makes it so that I can nurse the Little so I'm okay with it. I used a heavier stabilizer in the collar than I should have and that's what I'm attributing my collar problems to. I think I'm going to take the whole collar off and make a new one. The pattern was easy to follow but it did have a few techniques I had never done before, but the instructions and images were clear enough that I had no problems figuring it out. The fabric I used was a rayon jersey and it was great to work with. My serger is currently out of commission until I get a new needle so I used a ballpoint needle on my regular sewing machine with a stretch stitch and it worked great. All in all I think I'm going to make a few more of these dresses if I can find cute enough fabric. I'd love to find a cream stretch lace to make a black and white version of this dress. <br />
<br />
And my thoughts on Selfish Sewing week in particular? Do it. Be selfish. Just do it. It's was great to take a little it of time to make something for myself. I was so excited to get in the sewing room every day knowing that what I was making was just for me, just because I wanted to make it, and that I had no deadline to meet. I highly recommend being a little selfish to everyone.<br />
<br />
Also, be sure to check out the Selfish Sewing Flickr group. There are so many great projects on there that I now have about 10 new patterns that I'm dying to try.<br />

<br />
And what about you? How have you been selfish recently (either sewing related or just treating yourself well)? <br />
<br />
P.S. You'll have to forgive the way I look in the pictures. I had
just managed to get the Little down for a few minutes and wanted the hubs to get a
few shots of the dress in progress, so I had no time to do hair or
makeup or anything. I'm laughing in the second photo because the baby
had already woken up again. I didn't get any "me" time until after 8PM and when I finally did have time to myself I edited photos instead of sitting down at the sewing machine. But I am happy to say that I went through all of my photos from 2012 and 2013 and discovered that I have photos of over 40 projects that haven't been blogged about. I edited photos for ALL of these projects so hopefully there will be many many blog posts from me in the future.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, going back to my WIP blog post from <a href="http://sewingbystephanie.blogspot.com/2013/09/wip-wednesday-9-18-13.html" target="_blank">last week</a>, I spent the remainder of last week organizing my sewing room. It always ends up being a MUCH bigger task than I imagine it will be.<br />

It went from this:<br />

<br />
In between taking care of the Little and trying to get the house in order I managed to be a little bit #selfish today and made my first ever open wide zippered pouch using <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2012/06/open-wide-zippered-pouch-diy-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Noodlehead's tutorial</a>. <br />

Super straightforward and easy to follow, I think it took me around an hour and a half to make this beauty. She's perfect to sit next to my machine and hold all of my scissors and other things I need to have handy all the time. I made her out of some sewing themed fabrics I've been hoarding for awhile and I love it.</div>

It also helps that it's my birthday this week and if you can't be a little selfish on your birthday then when can you be? <br />
<br />
Thinking about it the last thing I sewed for myself was a nursing cover, but that doesn't really count, so that means that the last thing I sewed for myself was my camera bag that I made to go to Sewing Summit last October... so it's been 11 months since I've done any selfish sewing. Yep, it's definitely about time.<br />
<br />
I have no idea yet what I'll make, but I do have a few things I've been wanting to sew that keep getting pushed to the back burner, so maybe I'll focus on one of them.<br />

<br />
So without any adieu... enter #Throwback Thursdays<br />

<a href="http://quiltinjenny.blogspot.com/p/tbt-thwrowback-thursday.html" target="_blank">#Throwback Thursdays</a> at <a href="http://quiltinjenny.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Quiltin' Jenny</a> is an opportunity to blog about and share all of those projects from your past that never got their day in the spotlight, and believe me I have TONS of those. The number of projects I've made and never blogged about probably outnumber the number of projects I have blogged about (and that's not even counting all the stuff I made for the baby since I still have plans to blog about all that).<br />
<br />
And since today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day (aarrrggg!) I thought for my first #TBT I'd show you the Halloween costumes I made the hubs and I five years ago.<br />

For his costume I made the coat, shirt, and pants using Simplicity 4923, and for the sash and boot tops I made my own pattern. <br />

<br />
For my costume I used a pattern for the corset (which I can't find anymore and can't locate online, but it was either Simplicity, Butterick, or McCalls), but for the bloomers (which you can see better in the second photo), skirt, arm bands, and undershirt (since I was uncomfortable with the amount the corset showed) I made up my own pattern. <br />

<span style="font-size: xx-small;">(You'll have to forgive my attempt at a saucy pirate wench pose, I never dreamed at the time that this photo would be seen by anyone but the hubs and I, much less that it would end up being blogged about)</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">The hubs has gotten some use out of his pirate coat over the years but I've never stepped out of the house in my pirate wench costume, it ended up being WAY to revealing. If we ever decide to be pirates again I'll probably re-make my costume</span>, and next time I'll make it with a coat so I don't freeze to death Trick or Treating. <br />

Well, I finally got around to doing that yesterday, so now I'm happy to say that I'm 100% done with the quilt. Of course, today of all days it's overcast outside so I'll have to take photos of the quilt later this week.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3oJZCZ9TlWt7WRgF02bUnKAKwMva4E8IcuXacYlLL42Hsxli4fy1VptsaEdNOCTGTDzylts04ITB0CXtShJd0FW0w7cYvDc0wuLM4FXaY0hACecv2WpW9glkIsuc2yvTb2y6S9_Ir-oY/s1600/2013-09-18+08.13.33b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3oJZCZ9TlWt7WRgF02bUnKAKwMva4E8IcuXacYlLL42Hsxli4fy1VptsaEdNOCTGTDzylts04ITB0CXtShJd0FW0w7cYvDc0wuLM4FXaY0hACecv2WpW9glkIsuc2yvTb2y6S9_Ir-oY/s1600/2013-09-18+08.13.33b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
In the meantime the overcast weather seems to have put me into a cleaning and organizing mood because I've decided to re-organize my fabric storage. Of course I have no before photos (I'm never that organized), but I do have a few photos of how it all looks mid-organizing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRqbhfAXGhFNJQpvc-wbCQHmZ93FKSe5xVEINHzxZv9NY80JRQKvJD6r0gUT8nTgB6S32QG8ehVepukPKA55k88Ysann-K-kq-d3wTEDJkT5qS-JlCvSL9vDc0Fo9Eo6C1K1x6GGRSnoI/s1600/2013-09-18+08.10.52b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRqbhfAXGhFNJQpvc-wbCQHmZ93FKSe5xVEINHzxZv9NY80JRQKvJD6r0gUT8nTgB6S32QG8ehVepukPKA55k88Ysann-K-kq-d3wTEDJkT5qS-JlCvSL9vDc0Fo9Eo6C1K1x6GGRSnoI/s1600/2013-09-18+08.10.52b.jpg" /></a></div>
These shelves are the shelves that inspired me to re-organize. This space in my sewing room used to have a dresser that held all of my "other" fabric (all the non quilters cotton), but when we did the nursery we moved the dresser into the nursery and my sewing room got this cabinet that we found on the side of the road in our neighborhood.<br />
<br />
Before the reorganization started the bottom two shelves looked like the way the bottom shelf does now, and the second shelf had a few large folds of quilters cotton cotton in it, and the top shelf housed all of my fat quarter stacks and precuts. I've pretty much left the top shelf alone, but I put all of my "special collection" quilters cotton from my other fabric shelves on the second shelf where they can be a little more on display and are less likely to get dusty since they're behind glass. I also put all of my garment making fabric onto boards to make mini bolts and put all of those on the third shelf down. They go: linens, flannel, cotton, voile, corduroy, jersey knit. I still haven't decided what I'm going to do about the bottom shelf.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwxYAEfmkRTIqX_aUvav4AMSSbNoWk7ZbCT4vmMztUvyO_2rPeG1jN11y4aMHWqz_ye6otF0RXja-8wsYMpGuLkwrPG_l_WNjbxSRsUxWT1lxcWXVxjFUVPgvFXTuBVDCU7w7HYFQ6-VE/s1600/2013-09-18+08.28.37b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwxYAEfmkRTIqX_aUvav4AMSSbNoWk7ZbCT4vmMztUvyO_2rPeG1jN11y4aMHWqz_ye6otF0RXja-8wsYMpGuLkwrPG_l_WNjbxSRsUxWT1lxcWXVxjFUVPgvFXTuBVDCU7w7HYFQ6-VE/s1600/2013-09-18+08.28.37b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I moved my "special collection" fabrics off of these shelves I cleared up quite a bit of room so I was able to add some new fabric I've bought recently (I'll show photos later), as well as give my stash a bit more wiggle room. Before they had been so tightly jammed in there that you couldn't pull anything out without pulling a bunch of boards out at the same time. While I was in the precess of moving the mini bolts around I decided to make it prettier by putting them in rainbow order (they were already grouped by color, but the colors were on the shelves in a random order based on how they could fit), and now they look much better. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY4-arYpHRBXtUR7Kq72QMiha83ywei9_lHEpKrz_GJ3WxBhjzRmDJMVnvqyyrkMjuFLsVuWD4g8RWuoAiTznhP3pAaM61DSDnsotzcXRJZKjT_qCEMoPFAwZReHzzzE-ncnzh45OoKuo/s1600/2013-09-18+08.11.39b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY4-arYpHRBXtUR7Kq72QMiha83ywei9_lHEpKrz_GJ3WxBhjzRmDJMVnvqyyrkMjuFLsVuWD4g8RWuoAiTznhP3pAaM61DSDnsotzcXRJZKjT_qCEMoPFAwZReHzzzE-ncnzh45OoKuo/s1600/2013-09-18+08.11.39b.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Now it's a lot easier for me to see what fabrics are where, and hopefully it will inspire me to make more projects using my stash.<br />
<br />
My goal for the rest of the week is to finish organizing that bottom shelf and to get started again on <a href="http://sewingbystephanie.blogspot.com/2013/01/finish.html" target="_blank">my WIP list from the beginning of the year</a>. I definitely got sidetracked a bit from the list and only got a few of the things off of the top of the list done. Since many of the items are Christmas-themed items I really want to get back to them and get them done before the holiday season starts.<br />
<br />
I also have a quilt to make for my sister's first baby who's due in December. She's having a monster themed nursery in lilac and green and I think the <a href="http://suchdesigns.bigcartel.com/product/giggle-squeaktm-quilt-pattern" target="_blank">Giggle and Squeak pattern</a> from <a href="http://www.such-designs.com/" target="_blank">SUCH Design</a>s is going to look great in the colors she chose.<br />
<br />

Well at least it was a little mistake, and I'm glad I caught it before I sent the quilt off. </div>

Have any of you made any "little mistakes" like this recently?<br />

Almost done with the quilting on this one. I just need to quilt the border and then add the binding.<br />

It will have to wait though until after my husband and I take the baby to the park. <br />

These are the blocks from the Believe circle at Do. Good Stitches from February that I was supposed to put together and quilt months ago. Alas, pregnancy and motherhood and all that goes with that got in the way and I'm only now getting it done.<br />

<br />
The new design wall I hung over the closet doors in my sewing room has definitely helped me in putting this quilt top together. Before I had it up I had pulled the blocks out several times and tried to figure out how I would piece them together, but without being able to see them all at once I was at a loss as to what to do. With the help of the design wall I was able to arrange them all in a way that I thought looked good.<br />

Since the top was sort of on the small side I added a 6" border of Kona Bone. I have a pretty blue voile fabric that I bought to back this baby, and I hope to get to that either later today or tomorrow. I also have some pretty ambitious plans for how I'm going to quilt it, so hopefully they work out and the quilt looks good, otherwise I have no idea how I'll quilt it.<br />
